Jill Davis
Born under the creative Aquarian star sign in Zimbabwe in the late 1960s, Jill grew up in a time where basic necessities were in short supply and imagination made drums out of tin cans.
“To create something unique for a person, I need to get a true feel for them, who they are, their values, and where they see themselves in the world. The piece needs to reflect them, needs to have a purpose and a reason for being. I do not consider these works to be just another gift that can be purchased at any mass-production department store, but an extension of the recipient something that they will hand down to their future generations, a memory of themselves.”
Jill Davis talks about herself:
We humans like to decorate our lives with beauty, affording artists many canvases. Beautifully designed Jewellery can take the love of art to a new height by allowing us to wear our art as we go about our daily lives. For a Jewellery Artist, precious metals and stones offer an extraordinary palette. Each metal type almost develops a personality depending on how it is manipulated; how it is heated; how it is set and the end finish.
Trained in South Africa nearly 30 years ago, I arrived in Sydney Australia in 2001, where from my small studio I create Jewellery from raw precious metals. Here I melt; roll; bend; hammer; solder; file; etch; set and polish gold and silver into unique wearable art; pieces that are inspired and influenced by my own life (African and Australian), as well as aspects of my world that I love (the beauty of nature and contemporary art). Jewellery lovers will be able to identify with most of my pieces, however as a person who has never bought into the “One size fits all” culture; and as a believer in each of us as unique individuals, it is also important for me to be able to assist others by making Jewellery specific to their own artistic tastes. Your wearable art should be a reflection of who you are… it should be telling your story so that in years to come the piece develops a history… it becomes an heirloom. As such, I accept commissions from clients to design and make their personal Jewellery pieces, and restore older heirlooms where possible.
My specialty, and what I love most, is to design and make new Jewellery for my clients by using their old or inherited Jewellery in the new pieces. It is the perfect way to honor a loved one by including something that once was theirs into a new sentimental piece, “Creating new memories from old”.
